Meriansbrush - Calliteara pudibunda

Meriansborstel A butterfly (Lymantriidae) common to Europe and Asia (temperate). The butterfly can be seen from april to june in woods, gardens and parks.

The butterfly is not remarkable in its colours quite unlike the catterpillar. The catterpillar is polyphage and eats leafs from different decidous trees. In October they pupate and survive till next spring.

The Cauliflower Mushroom - Sparassis herbstii

This 'Cauliflower Mushroom' is absolutely remarkable. I have never seen such a large and strange mushroom before. Found on september 22, next to a road in the woods between Driebergen and Maarn (Netherlands), close to highway A12.

On mushroomexpert.com you can find more information.

The mushroom is a parasite but not harmfull for the tree.

Size: about 30 cm

Habitat details: about 1 meter from the base of a Pinetree probably growing from the root.
